Personal Life:
Thomas was born with a paralyzed left eye, and underwent five eye operations by the age of six, the last surgery was “botched”, giving him a drooping eyelid. His family moved frequently. His father, a nuclear physicist and later a chemical equipment salesman, was hired by a firm in Scotland shortly after Thomas’ birth; the family lived there until Thomas was seven, and he moved from school to school.
Thomas left home to study at the University of Exeter. At Exeter, he worked as a DJ, performed experimental music with a classical ensemble, and played with a band. After graduating, he returned home and applied for a job as a Data Analyst, he juggled his work and his passion for music.
Roles:
Thomas collects and studies data to reveal ways to improve a business, organization or government entity; or databases and the data entered into those databases. The data can involve almost any topic including employees, customers, marketing, sales, manufacturing or distribution.
He communicates the results of his analysis as a comprehensive report to decision makers and others affected by the results. He usually designs the report and includes tools that can help those involved easily digest the data, such as statistics, graphs, images and lists. He might distribute the report via shared software, email, chat, or online or a face-to-face meeting presentation. In the report, offers several potential solutions, such as a new business process, training method or technology; or employee or departmental changes.
Goals:
To discover useful information, suggesting conclusions, and supporting decision-making. To identify and interpret patterns and trends, assess data quality and eliminate irrelevant data.
To be able to work while pursuing passion. Thomas plays in a band, his dream is to become a successful musician. He wants to pursue his dreams while not sacrificing his stable work since he can’t pay his bills without it.
Challenges:
Understanding the potential of big data issues. Thomas needs to be not only aware of the potential but be able to see the application and implementation of results in the context of the workplace. He needs to not only understand the big picture but to concentrate his focus on application.
Being able to juggle his work and his passion. Thomas needs to organize his schedule to be able to play with his band without sacrificing his time for work.
